What is your Family Wedding Tradition?

I have heard of some families totally trashing the “Newly Weds” home while they are away on their honeymoon.  Cheerios in the bed,  toilet paper all over with no unused roll left, clothes tampered with, a total mess to come home to.  Can you imagine?  I don’t think I would leave for my honeymoon.

Other more common traditions may be as simple as the family gathering together the day after a wedding.  In our family it is to consume of the left overs.  YUM! 

I remember thinking, “What are they going to do to my car?”  Funny, I enjoyed our reception so much that I never noticed…. When we left the reception and went to get into our vehicle it was impossible.   Every one of the balloons used in our Reception hall were stuffed into our vehicle!  What fun it was taking them out.

Let’s talk Wedding Invitations..

Deciding on an invitation. Things to consider:

Postage:  One stamp for the invitation and one for your response envelope.

- Square invitations are automatically extra postage

- Invitations should always be taken to your post office and weighed with all parts before stamping. 

Invitations tend to prelude what will be expected at your wedding.  Therefore, most couples choose an invitation that ties in with their wedding.  Usually, this is by invitation color or theme.  We have a rainbow of color shades choose from for most products.  Modern Invitations Modern Invitations II 

• Have an idea of what you are looking for. There are many different Options to choose from.
  • Single Card
  • Double Layer
  • Triple Layer
  • Pocket or Jacket fold

•  What is your Budget for Invitations?

Save the Date
Save the Date cards are sent to your guests in advance of your wedding invitations. This assists in allowing your guests to leave that date free. Out of town guests greatly appreciate the heads up so they can check ahead for travel arrangements.

Wedding Invitation
Proper Etiquette suggests Wedding Invitations be sent to guests 6 to 8 weeks prior to the wedding. The response date should be 2 – 3 weeks prior to the wedding date. The caterer usually needs a head count and you want to give yourself time to receive all the responses for an accurate number.

Reply Card
A Reply Card encourages your guests to respond to the invitation of your wedding.  This card is sent with the Invitation.  A response envelope pre-addressed and pre-stamped  should accompany the Reply card.

Reception Card 

A Reception Card traditionally accompanies the Wedding Invitation.  This card illustrates where and when the Wedding Reception will be.  It is not unlikely to have this card omitted and add the information added to the bottom of your Invitation as a foot note.  This usually occurs when the Reception immediately follows the ceremony.

Thank You Card
Thank  you cards printed with your monogram or married name on the outside, leaving the inside blank for your own personal message illustrates you appreciate the thought and effort which went into your gift.  Although, pre-printed cards are always an option, they lack the personal touch that says how much you care.  In addition, by personalizing with only a monogram you can order a few extra and have them for future use.

Program
An outline of Ceremonial events printed on an elegant paper stock.  This assists guests in knowing what is going to happen next. 

Place Card
Using a fold over card or single card inserted into a place card holder, these petite cards indicate the seating arrangement for each individual guest.  They can be placed on the tables or on a single table in the entryway of the reception.  Each card with each guests name and table number.  Each table should be marked with a table number.  (Table plan)

Menu
Outline the meals and events of the Reception, including speeches given by Bridal Party.

Wedding Announcements
Wedding Announcements sent after a wedding has taken place. Announcements are usually issued by the new Bride & Groom.     

Some things to consider:

 That’s how long my husband and I have been together.  I believe the secret is to keep it romantic and fun.  Everyone has good days and bad days in their relationships.  The key is figuring out how to have more of the good days.  The old saying, “If Mama ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy”, says a lot.  However, I believe that goes for “daddy’s” as well.

1. Allow time to get your marriage license – A Florida marriage license can be obtained at any courthouse in the state of Florida for a fee of $93.50, and is good anywhere in the State. But both bride and groom must be present during normal business hours on a weekday to get one. If neither the bride nor groom is a Florida resident, the license is valid the day it is issued (there is a three day wait for Florida residents) and is good for 60 days. 2. Keep an eye on the weather – Contrary to popular belief, it can get quite chilly in Florida during the winter months (40s and 50s during the day are not unheard of – brrrr!). And hurricanes are always a possible threat to your wedding plans during the summer. The most active part of the Atlantic hurricane season is Mid-September through the end of October. Best time of year for a Florida wedding weather-wise? March through May, or November through December!

3. Choose the right time of day. Early morning or about one hour before sunset will give you the best lighting for a beach wedding. You have more flexibility if you’re in a shaded area or indoors.

4. On that note, want sunset photos? Better plan in a Gulf Coast wedding from Tampa Bay to Naples – the sun sets in the West, after all!

5. Choose the right officiant – Florida only allows ordained clergy and Florida notaries to solemnize marriage. Sorry, but Cousin Joe may not be able to perform your ceremony!

6. Choose the right photographer – If you’re having a beach wedding, don’t hire a studio photographer who isn’t used to shooting in the elements (the sand and seagulls freak them out!), and vice versa.

7. Choose the right area for your interests – Florida has it all, from horseback riding and hunting to upscale glitz and glamour. The major metropolitan areas (clockwise from top left) are: Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Daytona, Orlando, Miami, Key West, Naples, Fort Myers, and Tampa Bay. In between, you’re sure to find something for everyone!

8. Florida is a big state – It takes about 14 hours to drive from one end (Pensacola) to the other (Key West). Plan accordingly if you’re road-tripping!

9. Most Florida beachfront hotels are super-savvy when it comes to weddings of all shapes and sizes – be sure to at least check with your hotel if you are looking for a service provider or venue.

10. The beaches are different on each coast. Those sugar-white sand photos you’ve seen? Gulf Coast from Pensacola to Naples. The East Coast from Jacksonville south has the light brown sand mixed with shells more typical of other Atlantic beaches. Miami and The Keys fall somewhere in between.

By the way, everyone we tell this story to says “Wow, you put up with this all summer?”. I loved every second of it!

On the last day of our school year, I pulled into our parking spot at our apartment. I walked in and there was a recorder there that gave me instructions on how to start up the projector that was on our table.  I worked through the instructions and came to a video Chris made for me. He went on about how beautiful I was, how he was ready for what everyone called the “Next Step” in our relationship.  We never saw it as a step though, just the where our hearts led us to go.  As I sat there sobbing uncontrollably alone in the apartment, he then explained that this was just the beginning of something exciting for the summer. All summer, we would have adventures and during some of these adventures I would receive pieces to a puzzle. On one side of the piece there would be a word that had something to do with marriage. I was to think about that word for the time I had the piece and reflect if this was something I could do the rest of my life with him.  On the other side of the piece was part of a message. At the end of the summer, when all 12 pieces were collected, I would put the puzzle together and read the message. So, then he had put together of collage and at the end he titled it “The Summer of Love”. I met him that night at a restaurant that we loved.  When I met him there, he gave me my first piece, FRIEND.  The summer continued like this:

After a great day at King’s Dominion with our good friends, I received a FRIEND piece.

When my family came to visit, we took them out to dinner at our favorite Italian place to eat and under my plate was a FAMILY piece.

We went and got tattoos and after mine was completed he gave me a FOREVER piece.

While I was teaching summer school, he surprised me with lunch and a SUPPORT piece.

I arrived home from teaching summer school and he had made a whole dinner menu and called it the Puzzlero , decorated our porch and made a special meal to which he gave me the HOME piece.

We went to a wonderful Reggae wine festival with friends and he gave me the SHARING piece.

He took me to a new town that we had never visited in our area and gave me the NEW piece.

We went tubing down a little creek off the Shenandoah River and he gave me the ADVENTURE piece.

He took me to an Improv Comedy Club in DC and gave me the LAUGHTER piece.

We got a new mattress for our bed in our new home and on the mattress was the INTIMACY piece.

The last day of our summer vacation, I arrived home from a day out. There was another video set up in the apartment instructing me to meet him at the place that we first met.  I walked in the doors and he was pacing in the gymanasitorium We met at a staff training center where he currently works.  He kissed and hugged me and handed me the last piece.  It said LOVE. I put the puzzle together, and the other side said “WILL YOU MARRY ME?”  I had prepped for this moment and had made my own mini puzzle you buy at the craft stores. It read “YES”, but I had to make him sweat it out for a few minutes and yes, I made him put the whole puzzle together.  It was an awesome experience.  So much fun and I was sorry to see the Summer of Love come to an end.  However, I was looking forward to our life and journey as a married couple so much more. 

Almost 6 years later and I fall deeper in love with him every day! He is my dream come true!

It was Christmas morning.  My boyfriend and I went to my parents house that morning to celebrate.  The time came for gift opening.  There was a HUGE box under the tree.  I’m talking huge, I think I could’ve fit inside it with room to spare.  Anyways, the box was to me.  I open it and inside is a bunch of shredded paper.  I’m thinking, great, right?  What the heck is this about? 

Then, I noticed there was writing on each piece of paper.  So, I started reading… “Julie, will you marry me?” on every piece of paper.  Wow, I started crying and couldn’t believe it.  I kept digging, I don’t know why. Down in the bottom was a dozen long stem red roses, rose petals and a small open box containing the most gorgeous diamond ring I have ever seen.  I looked at my boyfriend with tears in my eyes and screamed “YES!”  

            We have been married for 15 years!

 So, you want to hear my story?  Okay, here goes…

 My boyfriend, at the time, and I were dating for 1 year and I didn’t think he was ever going to ask me.  We went on  a vacation to Disney.  We ate at Cinderella’s Castle.  I am such  a huge fan of Cinderella. 

 Dinner was delicious but we weren’t ready for it to end.  So, we ordered dessert. 

 The dessert comes out on  a tray, being carried by Cinderella, herself.  So excited that Cinderella was coming to my table I didn’t notice that my boyfriend was trying to get my attention.  I didn’t see him next to me. 

 Finally, I turned and saw him on one knee.  Cinderella  was getting closer to our table.  I was stunned, I knew what was coming.  My boyfriend says the words I’ve been hoping to hear, “Jenny, will you marry me?” 

 I jumped up in excitement, screaming yes, yes, yes!  At the same time my arms flew up to hug him, I bumped the tray being carried by Cinderella.  The tray and dessert go flying…

 Finally, everyone calms down and I ask, “Where’s the ring?”  My boyfriend says, “It was the dessert.”

 Okay, so I had been dating my boyfriend for 1 ½ yrs.  He decided to surprise me with calling me in to work sick and insisting I take a day off.  He claimed he just wanted to spend some time with me since he works nights and I work days. 

 We drove up to Niagara Falls and went on the Maid of the Mist.  We spent the day by the Falls.  It was wonderful! 

 Night time came and the lights lit up the falls.  We were standing by the Falls when a Barber Shop Quartet approaches us singing.  How lovely I thought.  They were singing, “How do I live Without You”.  The one gentleman was carrying a bouquet of red roses.  My boyfriend approached him and took the roses, I thought he was purchasing one. 

He turned to me, got down on one knee and recited all the wonderful things he loves about me and why.  He confirmed how he would take care of me for the rest of our lives, would I Marry him. 

Of course I said Yes.  We have set the date for July of 2010.
